credit education
Credit isn't magic — it's a formula. Here's how it actually works, in plain language.
01 — The formula
The five factors behind every FICO score — weighted by impact.
Your track record of on-time payments. One misreported late payment can drag this down — which is why accuracy matters so much.
How much of your available credit you're using. Keeping utilization low — ideally under 30%, better under 10% — supports stronger scores.
The age of your oldest account and the average age of all accounts. Think twice before closing your oldest cards.
Recent applications and hard inquiries. Space out applications and only authorize pulls you actually need.
A blend of revolving accounts (cards) and installment loans shows you can manage different types of credit responsibly.
02 - the law is on your side
The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to accurate credit reports and to dispute any item that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable. Bureaus generally must investigate within 30 days.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act limits how collectors may contact you and gives you the right to demand written validation of any debt they claim you owe.
The Credit Repair Organizations Act protects you from deceptive credit repair practices — no company may guarantee results, charge before services are rendered, or advise you to misrepresent information.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is a free government channel for filing complaints when bureaus or furnishers fail to correct verified errors.
03 - Daily Discipline
Restoration removes what shouldn't be there. These habits build what should.
Keep card utilization under 30% — under 10% is stronger
Set autopay for at least the minimum on every account
Keep your oldest credit lines open and active
Space out new applications — every hard pull counts
Pull your free reports at annualcreditreport.com and actually read them
Dispute errors in writing and keep records of everything
